About the Guest:
Heather Whetsel is a Registered Respiratory Therapist with a career spanning several decades. Graduating from Ball State University in 1995 with an AS degree, she later pursued a BA degree. Initially, Heather worked briefly at St. Francis Hospital before securing a full-time night shift position at Methodist Hospital. Progressing from a staff respiratory therapist to an ICU clinical specialist, she honed essential skills in time management, communication, critical thinking, and assessment during her tenure at Methodist.
In 2000, Heather transitioned to a long-term acute care hospital, prioritizing a day shift for a better work-life balance. Concurrently, she embraced a role as an adjunct lab instructor for the IU RT program, dedicating one day a week to teaching. Juggling part-time hours between her PRN position at the long-term acute care hospital and teaching, Heather maintained a dynamic professional balance.
In 2008, Heather returned to the acute hospital setting, taking on a PRN position at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital while continuing her role as a teacher at the IU/BSU RT school. Facing a significant decision in May 2021, Heather opted to transition into a full-time role as the supervisor for the Respiratory Therapy department, relinquishing her beloved teaching position. Despite missing teaching every day, she finds fulfillment in leading an exceptional team at Community Heart and Vascular as the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor. Heather envisions a stable future in her current role.
